Vacuum tubes (valves): "electronics at work" 1943 westinghouse 21min

Vacuum Tubes (Valves):
more at electronics.quickfound.net "Explains the six basic functions of electronic tubes and shows how each type of tube is used in industrial and military applications." Public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and equalization. en.wikipedia.org In electronics, a vacuum tube, electron tube (in North America), or thermionic valve (elsewhere, especially in Britain), reduced to simply "tube" or "valve" in everyday parlance, is a device that relies on the flow of electric current through a vacuum. Vacuum tubes may be used for rectification, amplification, switching, or similar processing or creation of electrical signals. Vacuum tubes rely on thermionic emission of electrons from a hot filament or hot cathode, that then travel through a vacuum toward the anode (commonly called the plate), which is held at a positive voltage relative to the cathode. Additional electrodes interposed between the cathode and anode can alter the current, giving the tube the ability to amplify and switch. Vacuum tubes were critical to the development of electronic technology... In most applications, vacuum tubes have been replaced by solid-state devices such as transistors and other semiconductor devices... However, tubes still find particular uses where solid ...

Vacuum Tubes in Anime!?
Check this out: vacuum tubes in anime!? Ah! My Goddess is a series with many electronics references, including a couple that related directly to the use of vacuum tube circuitry. This story originated in '88 and has been going ever since. The animation was produced in the 2000's, so it doesn't take place when vacuum tubes were common.

Theo's an electronics engineer, working in North London and specialising in valves (vacuum tubes). He makes and modifies quality hi-fi, and unique, stunning audio processors. His workshop's amazing too, so after he built me the most detailed distortion box I've ever seen, I asked if I could make a film about him and his work. AE EP#22 Electron Tubes Basics & Example Amplifier Project
In this video I quickly cover the electron tubes basics and show a little tube amp project, that uses the 1T4 (DF99). The 1T4 is a low voltage tube that can be operated from 45 (it actually works with 12V too) up to 90 VDC and a heater with only 1,5 V. It is also very cheap and can be as NOS for about 0,5 to 1€. Because of the power this tube requires general tube testers are not able to interrogate this tube. I have built a custom tester that can supply plate voltages between 0 and 1250 volts and a grid voltage between 0 and -100 volts. In addition, the tester can supperimpose a small sinusoidal signal on the grid and directly measure the mutual transconductance through the plate which is read directly off of a simple analog meter. Vintage components are used as well as a custom wound transformer to supply specific voltages.

Mullard - the blackburn vacuum tubes factory (full)

Mullard - The Blackburn Vacuum Tubes Factory (Full)
This great documentary about the manufacturing of thermionic valves was made by Mullard at the Blackburn factory in Great Britain. The plant was closed in the early 80's due to the decrease of demand for this kind of devices. A bit of history: The story begins in 1919 with the collapse of the Z Electric Lamp Company of Southfields run by Captain Stanley R Mullard. The following year, Captain Mullard moved on to set up the Mullard Radio Valve Company Limited. In 1924, still wanting to expand as the demand for valves continued to grow, Captain Mullard sold half his shares in the Mullard Radio Valve Company to NV Philips Gloeilampenfabriken of Eindhoven, Netherlands. This injection of capital allowed for the construction in Blackburn of what was to become the largest valve assembly works in the world. When the doors opened in 1938, the new Mullard Radio Valve Company Limited site employed 28 staff. This grew to about 3000 people by 1945 and by 1954 the site was capable of manufacturing 500000 valves per day. At its peak in 1961, the Mullard site generated its own gas and electricity, making it fully independent of the local town supplies. Over 6200 people were employed both in Blackburn and the various feeder factories supplying raw materials and sub-components to the valve works. Sadly, due to the demise of the valve in favour of the transistor, by 1984 all these factories had closed or moved to other activities. The Mullard organisation changed its name to Philips ...

Antique find: old zenith a835e vacuum-tube radio

Antique find: Old Zenith A835E Vacuum-Tube Radio
I don't know why I didn't approach showing this radio on YouTube sooner, but here it is. This is an old (age estimated to be about 50-70 years) Zenith A835E radio. I purchased this off my neighbor for $5 at a garage sale. She was selling this from her recently passed father, whom owned a house. It was in rather good condition, but still needs some sanding on the top. Good bass and I think I'm going to try hooking an iPod to the phono in for the ultimate retro docking speaker :P Really cool item and works AWESOME.
