Carbon metaphor and biopower: troubling the metaphor of the carbon footprint

Concurrent with the emergence of the global crisis of climate change, the metaphor of the carbon footprint has surfaced as a key social mark and measure of a troubled relationship between people and the biosphere. Emerging alongside the metaphor of the ecological footprint, coined by Wackernagel and Rees (1992), but itself having no single author or source, the metaphor of the carbon footprint has rapidly become naturalized as a figure of climate change consciousness, presumably inciting measurements and actions that will reduce negative human impacts on the atmosphere. A key sign of the popularization of this consciousness is the assertion that "the size of your carbon footprint may become one of the most important numbers in your life in the twenty-first century." (Pocket Idiot's Guide to Your Carbon Footprint) My paper seizes on this statement, along with numerous other expressions of its quantifying value (eg. carbon footprint calculators) to explore how the carbon footprint metaphor functions as a technology of what Michel Foucault calls 'biopower', that is, as a means through which humans as a species enter into history as a population to be managed. I contend that, within current contexts of climate change, it is as a "carbon species" that humans are being addressed and biopolitically managed. Carbon and climate: some unfortunate surprises (kevin gurney at casw 2009)

Kevin Gurney and his colleagues have produced a high-resolution emissions map of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States (the Vulcan project), and he is working on expanding that map to cover the entire globe. He is also exploring interactions between the carbon cycle, climate change, and human beings. And the news is not good. The biosphere and the oceans are reacting in an unexpected way. The good news is that the oceans and biosphere have been ameliorating a lot of humans' carbon emissions. The bad news it that it appears, from almost every line of research, that that is going to stop. Emissions are going to look worse in the future, because we won't be getting as much help from the biosphere and the oceans.
