Canon 7d dslr new picture styles and color grading

Confused about all of the talk regarding Picture Styles and how it relates to Color Grading...? Me Too.. I try a lot of them out, here are some of those samples. The Canon 7D and 5D and others benefit from uploaded styles to their camera. How do they effect the finished RAW footage shot? Lets see. Everything in this video is RAW right from the camera and imported into Adobe Premiere CS5. Nothing was touched, no color grading or any changes at all. Canon 7d film look color grading test - les bois park horse racing

I got bored so I took some stock footage I had on my computer from the horse races I went to over the weekend at Les Bois Park in Boise, Idaho. I used a Canon 7D with the kit lense. 28-135mm 3.5-5.6. I shot at 720p 60fps. I was just doing some color grading test to give stuff that film look. I am still very new at this so tips and critiques are appreciated.

Film look: technicolor cinestyle vs marvels cine picture style - dslr film noob

www.dslrfilmnoob.com One of the most popular methods for color correction with DSLR footage is to shoot with a flat picture style. This usually gives you more latitude when trying to grade footage in post. One of the most popular Flat pictures styles, and one that I often recommend is Marvels Cine Picture style currently on version 3.4. Canon in conjunction with Technicolor have finally released there own Flat picture style. Both are designed to make color correction in post easier when working with DSLR footage. I've been using the Marvels Cine picture style for quit some time and it was interesting to test it against Canon's picture style. After color correcting some test shots, it seems like Both Marvel's 3.4 and Canon's Cinestyle picture styles are very similar. It did feel like I was able to get a little more color adjustment out of Canon's CineStyle picture style then Marvel's 3.4, but the difference was minimal. Simple color correction was done in Colorista. I don't think you'll go wrong with either of these if you plan to grade your footage in post. Canon 7d test footage & colour grading.

A quick movie from the Canon 7d, edited with Final Cut Pro with colour grading from Magic Bullet Looks, its nothing too special, just an experiment to see what sort of quality the camera was giving and how it would come out. Shot in my garden so nothing revolutionary. Handheld so terribly shaky I'm afraid. Camera: Canon 7d Lens: 24-105mm F4 USM IS L Editing: Apple Final Cut Pro, Magic Bullet Looks. Soundtrack: Paramore- Only Exception The camera is a joy to use, although its taking a lot to get used to manual focusing without follow focus. Expect ALOT more to come! x

Another outdoor test with the Canon 7D using only available light. Everything was shot using the RedRock Micro Cinema Bundle and handheld shoulder rig. Shot with picture profile curtsey of Rob Ruscher, Sharpness: 0, Contrast: -2, Saturation: - 2, and Color Tone: 0. Then all color correction was done using Final Cut Pro's 3 way color corrector. Canon 7d test: no woman, no cry

***Hey Everybody, We posted the raw footage/project file of the "Canon 7d Test: No Woman, No Cry" on our blog so that curious folks can get a glimpse into the edit. Check it out at: gnarlybay.blogspot.com *** Most Thursdays we go to a local bar in Westerly, RI called Perks and Corks. Our friends Colin and Josh bartend there. They get us good and liquored up. Last Thursday, we received our Canon 7D in the mail, and it only made sense to try the thing out to see what it could do. A really cool local band called Sunday Gravy was playing and we captured their performance of 'No Woman, No Cry." This is our first foray into the world of DSLRs, and it completely blew us away. It really is an amazingly...uhhh...liberating, simple, and low-profile filmmaking tool. Much thanks to Josh for letting us borrow his 35mm 1.4L....and thanks to the Zoom H4n for hanging out in the corner and getting great sound (that was our first time using it, and we were really impressed) The edit is pretty straight forward. There's no color correction and we chopped the song up to make it look like we had more than one camera filming. Enjoy and feel free to ask any questions.
